Long car rides and road trips can be a lot of fun for your entire family or even for you and your friends. But these trips can also be dangerous, especially if you are putting unnecessary strain on your body by forcing it to drive for longer than it should just to reach the destination sooner rather than later. When it comes to driving, you always want to take the proper safety precautions to ensure you do not get into or cause an accident, whether you are planning a short drive to the local grocery store or you are planning a long road trip across the country.

Below are some tips specifically meant for keeping everyone safe during long car rides, so the next time you have to travel for business or pleasure and you will be behind the wheel for many hours straight, remember these ideas for staying safe.

1. Have Conversations with Passengers

If you are traveling with one or more passengers, keep the conversation going for as long as possible. This will help everyone, especially you, the driver, stay awake and focused on the road. If you switch between drivers, again try to stay awake so that you can keep an eye on the road and on each other. The passenger needs to make sure that he or she can take over if the driver becomes too tired. And if all passengers are tired, it is definitely time to stop somewhere safe to rest.

2. Bring Snacks to Eat While You Drive

Small snacks that you can eat while you drive can help you keep your energy levels up and keep you awake during long car rides. Have a passenger get them for you and hand them to you whenever you feel yourself getting a bit drained from the monotony of the road. Try cereal bars, nuts and seeds, and other items that fit easily in your hand and will allow you to still keep your hands on the steering wheel for safety.

3. Listen to Music and Sing Along

Play some music to keep yourself entertained and awake, and sing along as well if it helps keep your mind more alert and focused. Consider switching between different genres and styles of music, such as from instrumental to lyrical songs, and also throw in some talk radio or audio books. When you listen to someone speaking or telling jokes, you are actively engaged in what they are saying, you are potentially learning, you are curious to see where the story will go, and you are laughing. All of these stimulants help keep your mind awake for the ride.

4. Take Frequent Breaks

Taking frequent breaks is important, not just for taking short naps and bathroom breaks, but also for stretching out your legs, getting some movement back in your body to keep the blood pumping strong,and getting some fresh air. Stop to have a meal, to refuel your car, and to just enjoy the scenery. This will allow you to generate some new energy that will keep you going until your next rest stop.
